Biochemical analysis is an important method for diagnosing animal diseases. Accurate results are important for judging their health. Blood collection is the first step and requires careful handling by the veterinarian.

Pay attention before blood collection

●Make sure the place is bright enough, it is best to keep it at 25~28°C in summer and 15~20°C in winter;

●Blood collection site needs to be disinfected

● Syringes and test tubes for blood collection need to keep clean and dry.

● If anticoagulated whole blood is required, anticoagulant should be added in the syringe or test tube.

Today I am going to introduce a way of collecting blood for cats and dogs - cephalic vein

The cephalic vein is located on the front of the foreleg (the dorsal surface). The vein runs under the skin between the carpal (wrist) joint and the elbow.

There are two things to remember when restraining for cephalic vein venipuncture:

1.Keep the elbow extended.

2.Apply pressure so that the vein remains filled with blood.

There are two different ways to position your hand.

Using the index finger to occlude the cephalic vein

As the assistant, you'll stand on the side of the patient, opposite to the leg being sampled. The arm goes over the patient's back, grasping the limb being used. How you'll hold the head depends on the size of the patient. In large dogs, your other arm goes under the neck and pulls the head toward you.

In smaller patients, you can hold the head up with your hand or use your hand to hold onto the nose. In either case, you'll turn the animal's head away from the venipuncturist to allow room to approach the vein.
